Research and Scholarly Works

To enhance the research skills of the faculty and student body,  SLMCCM offers a 3-session Basic Research Course outside the curriculum for those who want to learn more about research outside their class or work hours. This course covers topics from research design and methods all the way to manuscript writing. During and even after these sessions, the participating faculty and students get mentoring and assistance as they prepare their research proposals, conduct their studies, and finalize their research manuscripts. After the basic course, an Advance Research Course is also prepared to cater to faculty with more advanced knowledge but still needs further learning on other related topics. This fosters a culture of research excellence outside the academic and work requirements, and encourages curiosity as well as critical thinking among the college body.

 

The College continues to adapt to various teaching and learning methods. Online learning delivery has proven to be a valuable educational tool both for the faculty and students. In this regard, the College would invest on production and creation of high quality, high-impact and professionally made online educational modules not only for research topics, but also for other disciplines of medicine. These modules would be made available to SLMCCM students and faculty, but it would later be made available to SLMC Consultants and Trainees.

 

The SLMCCM research forum gathers the entire college body wherein students from different year levels present the research outputs they have worked on throughout the year in front of faculty members and their peers in one of the General Faculty and Student Assemblies (GFSA) . All students are given the opportunity to present their scientific output through a poster, however,  a number of pre-selected groups of student researchers shall be orally presenting their research  output.

 

The SLMCCM-WHQM Research Immersion Program, spearheaded by the Office of Research and Scholarly Work, is a unique two-week initiative designed to immerse medical students in the world of scientific inquiry and medical research. Tailored for 1st to 3rd year medical students, this competitive program offers an intensive, hands-on experience in key areas of research such as literature review, protocol development, and the realities of conducting research in the medical field. Selected students benefit from personalized mentorship, interactive didactic sessions, and skill-building workshops that enhance their research capabilities. Through this program, students are equipped not only with essential research skills but also with the confidence and insight needed to navigate and contribute meaningfully to the ever-evolving medical landscape.

 

While faculty members of SLMCCM are primarily responsible for their teaching duties, they are also expected to enrich the teaching-learning environment through research and scholarly activities. By generating knowledge through research and applying it to improve teaching and practice, faculty can better navigate the evolving demands of education. However, research output remains a challenge in many institutions, including SLMCCM. Common barriers to research productivity include poor attitudes toward research, lack of interest, and insufficient skills or training.
