Pathology

Pathology is one of the more underappreciated subjects that one may encounter in the field of medicine. The fact of the matter is most of the people involved are usually in the laboratory and seldom seen. Nevertheless, this doesn’t make the subject less important; in fact pathology, as one may discover, will actually be involved and overlap with all other subjects and specialties in medicine. Pathology is actually divided in two major categories. The first, Anatomic pathology, delves with the diagnosis of diseases based on the macroscopic (gross), and microscopic examination of cells and tissues. Most of the focus of anatomic pathology would be the diagnosis and prognostication of different neoplastic processes. Clinical pathology on the other hand, is concerned with the laboratory testing of blood and other bodily fluids, tissues, and microscopic evaluation of individual cells, in order to support the diagnosis of various disease.

The SLMC College of Medicine, department of pathology is privileged enough to include subspecialists as well as nationally recognized experts in the field of pathology. This collective knowledge in laboratory diagnostics will enable students to clearly understand concepts and further integrate these learnings in disease pathophysiology and patient management.
